Excerpt from The Engineer If we eliminate any one of the engineering elements which underlie our present civiliza tion, the entire structure collapses. Let us suppose, for instance, that the mining - Engi neer is suddenly removed. The most imme diate effect would be the lack of fuel for our manufacture and commerce. Machinery could no longer be made, because there would be no metal. The use of electricity would cease, because there would be no copper. Education which depends on print ing, literature, the arts, all the luxuries and conveniences and most of the necessities of life would come abruptly to an end, and we should be plunged immediately into the darkness of the stone age. Excerpt from Elements of Mammalogy: Prepared for the Use of Schools and Colleges There is no easy method of acquiring knowledge. It is only to be ob tained by close attention and unceasing labour. N o matter what may be the quality of his faculties, the brilliance of his talents, to become usefully learned in any branch of human knowledge, every man must toil and take advantage of all the means within his reach. It has been asserted that, to become familiar with any branch of physical science, it is only necessary to see with the eyes and heat with the ears, without resorting to other means. It is contended, for example, that Natural History is best studied without the use of any books whatever, except the book of nature and its visible illustrations. This notion is entertained by persons of so much learning and influence that it is worth our time to in quire briefly, whether the plan has pretensions that should lead to its general adoption. Excerpt from Down Town Brooklyn: A Report to the Comptroller of the City of New York on Sites for Public Buildings and the Relocation of the Elevated Railroad Tracks Now in Lower Fulton Street, Borough of Brooklyn For the last twenty years the industrial population in Brooklyn has been greatly increasing. Officials and loyal citizens who desire that the historic character of Brooklyn should be preserved cannot afford to wait ten years before a beginning is made to brighten up the downtown district. Continued migrations of home owners from Brooklyn to New Jersey and to counties outside of Greater New York may weaken the ability of the borough to preserve its entity and character. If it should once become a somewhat neglected indus trial annex of Manhattan, the result would be injurious both to Brooklyn and Manhattan. N o greater calamity could happen to every part of Brooklyn than to have the borough lose its civic pride. The first example of this new species was met with in the vicinity of "Burke's Tree." My attention was first drawn to it by the familiar sharp call of the genus. Directly afterwards a small family party was observed flying from one tree-trunk to another, which they circled in true Climacteris fashion - in short hops, and tail pressed firmly against the bark when ascending the perpendicular tree-trunk.
As soon as the first specimen was secured I felt sure that it was a new bird. After this, and during the time the Cooper was followed down, these birds were often seen, but as soon as permanent waters were left behind the Tree-creepers were lost sight of. Many immature birds were in company with the parents, and being fully fledged denoted that they were hatched in June or July.
Climacteris waitei showed a great preference for the box timber, for it was not once seen amongst the large red gum trees on the banks of the creek. These birds were observed once or twice hopping over the ground in close proximity to tree-trunks, and seemed to be in search of insects - most likely ants, for the last-named form the chief food of C. superciliosa in some parts of the interior. How far this new species is found along the Cooper into Queensland I had no way of ascertaining, and it may extend much further in the other direction during flood-time.

Excerpt from Everyday Birds: Elementary Studies The largest bird in the United States is the California vulture, or condor, which measures from tip to tip of its wings nine feet and a half. At the other end of the scale are the humming birds, one kind Of which, at least, has wings that are less than an inch and a half in length. Next to these insect-like midgets come the birds which have been well named in Latin Regulus, and in English kinglets, - that is to say, little kings. The fitness of the title comes first from their tiny size, the chickadee is almost a giant in comparison, - and next from the fact that they wear patches of bright color (crowns) on their heads. Two species of kinglets are found at one season or another in nearly all parts of the United States, and are known respectively as the golden crown or goldcrest and the ruby-crown. The aim of the teaching should be to make the student realize fully the motions and forces which he is discussing; for this end examples drawn from moving apparatus, which he can handle, are preferable to the classical examples of imaginary astronomical bodies. The subject may be fully illustrated in the laboratory by teaching the student to make accurate measurements of forces, velocities, and accelerations, using moving carriages and revolving wheels rather than pendulums. The experiments should beon a sufficient scale to make the student realize that he is dealing with real forces and weights, not chemists' balance weights, which are apt to blow away if he sneeze. Models may also be made to illustrate the theories being taught.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book is good alternative for Elements of Meteorology, Vol. 2 : Part II; Meteorological Cycles (Classic Reprint). Download now for free or you can read online Experimental Researches Into the Properties and Motions of Fluids : With Theoretical Deductions Therefrom (Classic Reprint) book. Excerpt from Experimental Researches Into the Properties and Motions of Fluids: With Theoretical Deductions Therefrom In the Second Section, devoted to the discussion of cosmical phenomena in fluids, I have in some parts of this work followed certain ideas proposed by Lenz, Herschel and Dr. Carpenter. By further introducing principles of m6tions in fluids that I have dis covered, I am able to propose certain universal systems of motion for fluids upon the globe; consistent with the distribution of land and water as it exists, and at the same time such as will constantly influence this distribution. I have some hope that these researches may aid in the elevation of the sciences of physical geography and meteorology, now sciences of observation, to sciences of principle, to rank at some future period with such exact sciences as astronomy and chemistry, and that the principles proposed may be of some value also to systematic geology. I have no doubt, however, that my propositions will need much future correction to adapt them to local Circumstances, and altogether, I consider my efforts only the commencement of systematic work in this field of research. Excerpt from An Experimental Inquiry Into the Laws Which Regulate the Phenomena of Organic and Animal Life The Laws of Organic and Animal Life, in re gard to their susceptibility of demonstration, may be said to possess the properties of the exact and abstract sciences. On many subjects connected with these laws, direct experiments can be brought forward to prove the correctness or fallacy of what is advanced but it likewise fre quently happens that the evidence Which is quired, even in this way, must be considered to make Only a distant approximation to many im portant truths. Experiments allow us to go a certain length in endeavouring to develope the different functions of the system; but unless the refieéting powers enable us to surpass the limits prescribed to our imperfect means and senses, many principles of importance. This book is good alternative for Elements of Meteorology, Vol. 2 : Part II; Meteorological Cycles (Classic Reprint). Download now for free or you can read online The Extrusion of Metals : Machines and Methods Used in a Little Known Field of Metal Working (Classic Reprint) book. Excerpt from The Extrusion of Metals: Machines and Methods Used in a Little Known Field of Metal Working Although it had been found possible as early as 1850 to extrude such metals as lead and tin and thus form pipes and bars, the extrusion process had not, at that time, been successfully applied to the shaping, by means of extrusion, of such metals as copper, delta-metal, etc. It was when Alexander Dick, the inventor of the delta-metal, made some experiments with this material under high pressure and at high tempera ture, during the latter part of the eighties, that it was first shown that this material could be extruded in a heated state. There were, however, several difi'iculties to overcome. The extrusion process, as is well known, consists of hot plastic metal being pressed through a form or die at high pressure, so that a continuous bar or pipe of the cross-section of the die or form is produced. Lead and tin can be extruded at comparatively low temperatures (250 degrees E), but copper and similar metals re quire temperatures all the way up to 1750 or 1800 degrees F.
